Sea World Stranded Whale Struggles to Return to Water for 15 Minutes Before Trainers Help [VIDEO]
An 11-year-old girl was frantic after a Sea World pilot whale got stuck on a ledge and struggled to get back in water.
What was supposed to be a special family trip to Sea World turned otherwise for the De Leonibus family -- Carlo, his wife Ashley, and their 11-year-old daughter Catiana. The couple's daughter was a dolphin-lover so they decided to spend her birthday at Sea World to watch a dolphin show.
In an interview with the Daily News, Carlo recounted what happened. The aquatic show was postponed because of a looming storm when a pilot whale got stuck on the ledge of the pool. The whale struggled and floundered to get back in the water for several minutes as the audience watched and started to panic.
Carlo alerted a Sea World employee about it, but according to the report, the employee told him that the whale was just playing and that it was normal. As the whale kept struggling to get back on the pool, Carlo took a video of it. The video gained some 39,000 views.
A few more minutes and the crowd was yelling and protesting. In the same interview by the Daily News, Carlo shares, "The crowd was really upset and panicking. My daughter was screaming. She's been really disillusioned by Sea World."
After 10 to 15 minutes of the whale struggling at the ledge, two dolphin trainers went up to push the whale back to the pool.
The Daily News tried to reach Sea World for a comment. Spokesperson Nick Gollattscheck explained, "The pilot whales come out on the ledge all the time and always get back into the deeper water without any problem. The animals seem to enjoy it and it has no effect on their health or wellbeing. The younger and more inexperienced animals -- like the one on the video -- sometimes take a little longer, because they haven't completely mastered the technique yet. The whale was never in danger."
