Will Bayern Munich Repeat Treble in 2013-14? Bastian Schweinsteiger Remains Positive
Heading into 2014, few would doubt that Bayern Munich is the favorite to repeat its astonishing feat of a treble in 2013. Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger asserts that the team is in fact ready for anything.
"We have only won one game in the second half of the [Bundesliga] season, so we'll still have to pick up a few points. It's good that we have started so confidently," Schweinsteiger stated, according to Goal.com. "We will try to defend our title and also the Champions League. We have the chance to do so. There are four or five teams who want to get this trophy.
"But, if we are in good shape and all the players are together, we are ready for everything."
Bayern Munich is already perched atop the Bundesliga comfortably with 47 points; second place Bayer Leverkusen has 37. The team has yet to lose a single game in the league under new coach Pep Guardiola and has not shown any indication that losing is a possibility. The team is already in the quarterfinals in the German Cup.
As it stands the main challenge would be the Champions League title. Munich is slated to play Arsenal, a team that it defeated 3-3 on aggregate thanks to away goals. Munich won the opening match of that round of 16 tie 3-1 on the road before losing 2-0 at home. Arsenal is a far superior team this time around and should give Munich more trouble than a year ago. If the German champs manage to get past the English side, teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund or even Paris Saint-Germain could stand in its way.
