'Sons of Anarchy' Season 7 Premiere, Cast News, and Rumors: Charlie Hunnam Reveals He Has a Lot in Common With Jax Teller
Charlie Hunnam, who is best known for his badass role as Jackson "Jax" Nathaniel Teller on FX's "Sons of Anarchy," reveals that he has a lot in common with the president of SAMCRO.
The 32-year-old actor discussed his battle with the "pretty boy" image that Hollywood has branded on him. "I was playing pretty boys and these angelic roles like Nicholas Nickleby and all the stuff. And I was like, 'What am I doing? This isn't who I am, as a man or an artist,'" he said. "I had to overcome people's belief that I was too pretty to be a badass."
While he chooses to ride the big Harley over Vespa any day, Hunnam revealed that he shares similarities with the hit outlaw motorcycle club series' protagonist and how his aggressive role most certainly brings out the best of his acting ability.
"A lot of my friends are gangsters. Not like gangsters -- well, yeah, all sorts of levels of criminality -- but not the types that are preying on innocent people," said Hunnam. "I have no interest in the type of criminality that has no respect for collateral damage. But I don't condemn the guys who say, 'This society we've created is kind of [messed up], and I'm willing to take it down -- for selfish gain -- but also to make a point."
Growing up in Newcastle, the British actor also admitted that he could easily connect to Jax, especially dealing with Tara Knowles in the early seasons of the popular show -- when his character agreed to her to get out of Charming before she was killed by his own mother Gemma Teller Morrow. "It's something I innately relate to, and it's familiar to me. That same dynamic played out between my mum and my dad, which is why they split up," he said. "My dad was a tough guy, and he was in the scrap-metal industry. And it's a legal industry, but for many, many reasons, it's very tough."
"Violence is a currency in that industry. My dad was a super tough guy and ended up getting in some problems that were a little bit scary, and my mom and he decided it wasn't an environment they felt safe raising kids in," he added. "So that's a dynamic I've always been familiar with, this question of where your loved one would fit into that type of lifestyle. It's very hard."
"Sons of Anarchy" season seven is set to air on FX in September.
