Looks like Edgar Wright won't be bringing his unique brand of comedy and adventure to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after all.

Deadline reported that the former director of Marvel Studio's upcoming film 'Ant-Man' has left the project for good. Both parties claimed the split was on mutual terms in a joint statement released Friday.

"Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on 'Ant-Man' due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly."

Who Marvel will choose to take over at this point is unknown. It is likely that a decision will need to be made right away as the studio still is aiming to have the movie ready for its July 17, 2015, release date.

Fans are likely to be disappointed that Edgar Wright, the mind behind the "Cornetto Trilogy" ("Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz," "The World's End") as well as the adaptation of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," will not get to realize his vision of Ant-Man on the big screen. The film had been planned for some time with Wright signing on in 2006 and the script undergoing several delays and rewrites.

"I had a chance to do Ant-Man in 2011," Wright said at a Comic Con Q&A last year. "Simon was busy with three franchises, if you count 'Tin-Tin' along with 'Star Trek' and 'Mission: Impossible.' We had the story down, and it was in the back of my mind that if we didn't do this film soon it might never happen, and we owed it to the fans. But then something else happened. [Working Title partner] Eric Fellner was diagnosed with cancer. When I found out about that, I'd literally just finished another screenplay for him, and it was on delivery that he told me. He has given me permission to tell this ['World's End'] story. That changed everything."

"Ant-Man" is the story of a Marvel superhero who obtains the technology to shrink his size and communicate with insects. The film will star Paul Rudd, Michael Douglass, Patrick Wilson, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Pena.
