Skateboards & Mode of Transportation: New Electric Skateboard Can Go Miles on One Charge
Tony Hawk may be the king of the half-pipe, but now you can be too with a brand new Marbel Skateboard. Produced in Tampa, Florida, Marbel is at the forefront of alternative transportation innovation.
The premise behind Marbel Skateboard's $1200 electric skateboard is comfort, convenience, fitness and portability. It's meant to be used in lieu of a bike or car for short trips and work commutes. Though some exercise is good, Marbel's founder Matt Belcher warns that "sweating" isn't a good thing when arriving to work, and that's where the motor comes in.
With a purported range of 10-plus miles (and that includes riding uphill nonetheless) and a weight of just 9.9 pounds, Marbel's new board is sure to be a hit with road weary cyclists and gas station hating motorists everywhere. In other words, it's the everyman's grip taped Tesla, and that comparison isn't as far-fetched as it might sound given the similarities in battery technology the two share.
Marbel is guaranteeing the board for a whole year of shredding and touts that it can be charged up to full-capacity 1,000 times. After the 1,000th charge, the board's electric range dips to 7.5 miles, still not bad for short runs to the coffee shop down the block.
Now, what happens if your board's battery dies? Every Marbel skateboard comes equipped with a universal charger capable of getting the board's motors fully charged in just 90 minutes flat.
So you may be wondering how do you ride this thing? There are three ways to get boogying: kicking with your foot, just like a standard skateboard; using the included handheld remote in conjunction with the electric motor; or by whipping out your Android or iOS-based smartphone and leaving the remote at home.
Like driving around a small 49cc scooter, you won't be needing any special license or insurance to ride a Marbel electric skateboard. However, using your best judgement and wearing a helmet is probably a good idea.
This board isn't a gimmick. Watch riders carve up the mean streets of Tampa in Marbel's product demonstration video below.
