NBA News: Divac Admits He Received Better Cousins Deal 2 Days Ago
Starting off his press conference to discuss Sacramento trading away All-Star DeMarcus Cousins to the New Orleans Pelicans, Kings General Manager Vlade Divac began by joking with reporters Monday that he thought he would have a chair to sit on instead of standing to assess with their questions.
It was a harmless joke that got a few chuckles from the assembled media, but it was something else that Divac said later on that was far more amusing. According to CBS Sports, when pressed as to why the Sacramento Kings decided to move on from Cousins at this stage of the season, especially now that the trade deadline is still a few days away.
Sacramento might also have received a way better offer, Divac provided a straightforward answer. Divac, very honestly and sincerely, said that the Kings actually had a better deal two days ago but it went away while Sacramento was still considering it. So not wanting the same thing to happen again, Divac accepted the Pelicans' low-key offer of Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway, and a 2017 first-round and second-round selection.
"Most likely we would definitely get less," Divac said during the press conference. "Because we actually had a better deal two days ago."
According to ESPN - Sports Fans 100.5, Divac's admission ultimately stunned reporters, which lead to a brief moment of shocking silence. Another reporter then asked for Divac to clarify if he meant that he had a better deal prior to the one the Kings received from the Pelicans.
"Yup," Divac said. He, later on, said that he doesn't want to go deep into details since he doesn't intend to discuss the whole process. He also claimed that it was the best time and the best offer for the Kings at this critical time.
It has already been known that Divac has made some bad decisions in the past, like trading away Nik Stauskas and several picks just to get salary cap space, and not to mention his drafting history has been littered with poor choices. Now, it looks like, by Divac's own admission, he has clearly made a less than stellar deal just so the Kings could rid themselves of Cousins.
