The Story Behind Every Star In The Hollywood Walk Of Fame: The Process Of Nomination And The Price To Pay For It
Taking a picture while on Hollywood Boulevard is not only for the view of the city, the stores and the feeling of being close to 'stardom'. Looking down on the steps of Gower Street to La Brea Avenue, and extending a little to Marshfield Way, stars are embedded in the sidewalks. But these are not just for decoration, as 10 million visitors or more stopovers to take their own picture beside these brass-covered stars with representing one lucky Hollywood celebrity.
Although earning a star requires a lot of processes and a list of qualification, it is not a gift freely given to the candidate. In a recent report from POPSUGAR, the star comes with a hefty price and with a potential sponsor to support the claim. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is in charge of the pre-nomination of 20 candidates, but these candidates are already nominated by the personality's publicist or someone who can also provide sponsorship.
The sponsor or nominator will have to ask the celebrity's consent first in a form of signing a contract to agree on having his or her name on a star on Hollywood Boulevard. Moreover, he or she must be present to the formalities of unveiling it to the public. After submission and screening of applicants, the sponsor will have to pay for the star, which is worth $40,000, all for the construction and maintenance of the star on Hollywood Walk of Fame.
But on October 2016, James Lambert Otis shattered President Donald Trump's star using a pickax and a sledgehammer and then took out the brass medallion in the middle of the five-pointed terrazzo. Based on reports from Washington Post, the 53-year-old man will have to pay $3,700 to the Hollywood Historic Trust, to compensate for the maintenance of the stars on the Walk of Fame. Furthermore, $700 will be paid by Otis to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which runs the Walk of Fame.
For some, having a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame means to honor and to recognize the one who owns it. However, still, a lot of famous and veteran personalities do not have the star for some reason that only they know.
