NBA News: Guard Brandon Jennings Waived By New York Knicks, Wants To Play For Contender Team
The New York Knicks haven't made any significant moves leading to the trade deadline, but they did recently make one on Monday. As per league sources, the Knicks has waived backup point guard Brandon Jennings, who later on confirmed the news on Twitter.
According to Jennings on his Twitter account, @brandonjennings, "Thank you to all the NY Knicks fans for the love all year long, and thanks to my teammates and the New York Knicks organization." He then posted a second tweet, saying that playing in Madison Square Garden, as he calls as "the Mecca" was an amazing experience for him and he is looking forward to being back on the court soon.
A report coming from CBS Sports has reported that Jennings had previously told the Knicks that he intended to play for a playoff team. In turn, New York will be signing former 76ers guard Chasson Randle to replace Jennings, as per The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski.
This recent move doesn't have any much of an impact on the Knicks, who are clearly lopsided and are definitely going nowhere this season. Jennings, on the other hand, could be a nice piece to a contending playoff-bound team in need of a solid backup point guard.
This season, Jennings averaged 8.6 points and 4.9 assists per game for the New York Knicks in about 25 minutes per game, as well as filling in nicely as the starting PG during several games when Derrick Rose was out. According to MSN, Jennings was supposed to be a bona fide starting point guard for the Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistons before tearing his Achilles tendon during the 2014-15 season.
With that injury, it's very much unlikely that he will ever reach that star level again, but he is still a player that can certainly push the pace and provide bench scoring for any team that needs it. As of right now, teams are already in inquiring about his availability.
