NBA News: DeMarcus Cousins Suspended One Game After Receiving 16th Technical Foul
According to league sources, DeMarcus Cousins will be serving a one-game suspension, as assessed by the league office, after receiving his 16th technical foul. He learned about the news on Wednesday that he will be serving a suspension after earning his 16th tech during Sunday's loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
According to CBS Sports, Cousins received the technical early during Sunday's Pels-Thunder game, during which he had a brief altercation with Thunder center Steven Adams in the first quarter. The Pelicans had been hoping that the NBA would rescind the foul, but it turns out that won't be the case, and he will now be suspended for the second time this season.
Cousins will be eligible to return Friday against the San Antonio Spurs, but is still in watch and will be subject to yet another suspension if he ever picks up two more technical fouls. According to NBA rules, after a player is assessed with his 16th technical, he will face a suspension for every two subsequent technical fouls that he commits.
In order to cover for Cousins' absence Wednesday, the Pelicans' other superstar Anthony Davis is expected to log most of his minutes playing at center, with Dante Cunningham potentially injected at the starting five and picking up the bulk of the playing time at the power forward position. According to Hoops Rumors, many analysts thinks that it is very unfortunate that just less than a week after making his official debut for the Pelicans, DeMarcus Cousins is already facing his first suspension as a member of the team.
Cousins will miss the Pelicans' next game on Wednesday night against the Pistons at the Palace. He will also lose 1/110th of his salary for the season, which is the usual amount for a single-game suspension. Based on his salary of nearly $17 million, that would total the amount of $154K lost.
