NBA 2K14 Features, Gameplay and Release Date: Steve Kerr Returns as In-Game Commentator [Behind The Scenes]
Steve Kerr is returning as one of the commentators for the upcoming NBA 2K14 video game set to be released in October.
Sports enthusiasts and gamers alike will definitely agree that commentators make any sports game more entertaining, informative and engaging. Just imagine watching a basketball game on TV or playing a video game on mute -- that should be pretty boring.
One of the best things about the NBA video games published by 2K Sports is the reality of its commentating. It's like having Steve Kerr, Kevin Harlan and Clark Kellogg in your living room, watching you play the game. But how did 2K and the commentators work on this feature?
Bleacher Report went on a behind-the-scenes look at how Steve Kerr, NBA commentator for TNT and in-game commentator for NBA video games, works on the new NBA 2K game.
"It's very intimidating early on in the process because we do the work by hours. So I know going into each year that I've got maybe 40-50 hours of work ahead," explains Kerr in the video as noted by HNGN. "So the very first session we'll do three of four hours, finish and then I'll think, 'Aww man I've got like 47 hours left (laughs)."
According to Kerr, this is "probably" his sixth year doing voiceovers for video games, but he says working with NBA 2K has always been a pleasure.
"These guys here at 2K they encourage me to say what I think. I can completely go off script if I want," he notes. "It's really a good formula because of having themes to talk about but plenty of freedom to stray from the script as well."
Kerr, who is also a five-time NBA Champion (three times with the Bulls, two with the Spurs), also says he gets a lot of comments about his in-game commentaries -- some comical, some not-so.
"I get calls from friends of mine saying 'I thought you were at our house today because my kid was playing the video game and I heard your voice and I went looking for you in the other room," he said. "Plenty of people questioned my strategic decision-making on the air of my video games. That's OK, I welcome all criticism."
