'Overwatch' Update: Blizzard Clamping Down On XP Cheats, Banning Players Who Are Caught
Any player who is farming "Overwatch" XP through somewhat sneaky and unconventional methods may want to change their ways, as the game's developer Blizzard has made its mind and is coming down hard on cheats from now on.
In a recent forum post, "Overwatch" game director Jeff Kaplan has conveyed the company's plans on stopping players who are exploiting the recently-introduced custom games. Until now these matches did not kick any player for becoming inactive, and in periods of the low player count, they would revert to a Team Deathmatch-style mode, called Skirmish.
According to GameSpot, Kaplan wrote that it is very disappointing that some players have abused the system to gain experience while being inactive. "Most players might have noticed that Skirmish in Custom Game no longer gives experience. Additionally, the AFK timer is now in place in Skirmish mode," he added.
Kaplan also made it very, very clear that the "Overwatch" team is now going to start taking disciplinary action against players who partake in these strictly prohibited activities. If a player creates a Custom Game that in any way would encourage other players to gain experience while inactive, that particular player would risk having his/her account banned.
If a player also joins any game mode with the intent of gaining experience while being AFK, they are also at risk of having their accounts banned. According to a report from MMMOS.com, despite all the warning, it might not be the end of the sanctions either, as Kaplan warned, as players who are continuing to abuse the system could face further punishment.
Kaplan says that the "Overwatch" team would rather not get to that point, though, which is why he is pleading with the "Overwatch" community to not cheat and to immediately report anyone who does. He says that he is going to ask for some help from the vast majority of players who are simply playing the game for fun and not abusing it.
