Katy Perry opened up about her sexuality while receiving the National Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign. The singer also praised the LGBTQ community.

According to The Guardian, Katy Perry admitted that she has struggled a lot to accept her sexuality while growing up.  The singer stated that while growing up topics like homosexuality was a synonym to abomination or hell.

However, even when Katy Perry was young she was curious about the issue. She knew that sexuality cannot be painted in black-and-white. "I speak my truths and I paint my fantasies into these little bite-sized pop songs, for instance, "I kissed a girl and I liked it," The Guardian quoted Katy Perry. The singer then revealed that she did more than just kissing, though.

According to Metro, Katy Perry's "I kissed a girl and I liked it" was slammed by critics. Many believed that it was 'demeaning to gay people'.However, Katy Perry knew that through the song she has given the world a topic of conversation. And people became curious enough to sing along. The 32-year old stated that one may not able to choose their family, but they can choose their tribe.

Katy Perry further admitted that growing up she was not surrounded with people who were accepting of homosexuality. Thus at one point she even tried to 'pray the gay away at Jesus camp'.

However, Katy Perry finally found herself among people who encouraged her to be a true self. The singer called this her gift. She added that she was introduced to people outside her bubble, and her bubble started to burst.

She thanked the people from the LGBTQ community and admitted that without them she would've been half the person she is today. Katy Perry tweeted that she will continue to be 'a champion, an ally, a spotlight, and a loving voice for all LGBTQ-identifying people'.
