It was previously announced that the Huawei Mate 9 is going to be the very first non-Amazon device to have support for Amazon Alexa, way back at CES 2016. However, the feature wasn't included when the phone was officially released and shipped in the United States.

However, Huawei had also said that the feature would only be delivered in a later update. Now, Huawei has fulfilled its promise, and the Alexa update has started rolling out in the United States.

According to Android Police, this will make the Mate 9 a very interesting device for voice interaction. During the months in-between Alexa's announcement and release, Google has also started rolling its Assistant out to numerous phones.

The Huawei Mate 9 also has Google's Assistant, and now it's about to be getting Amazon's Alexa too. This would make it the ideal device to try the two AI assistants side-by-side; Amazon has previously noted that Alexa is great at several things like home automation, shopping, and even news, while Google claims that its Assistant also does the same thing.

The much-anticipated update might be starting its rollout today, but it looks to be staged in different levels. Many Huawei Mate 9 owners have claimed that they haven't seen any OTAs come through on their phones as of the moment.

In order to use Alexa's voice commands on the Huawei Mate 9, an Article on Droid Life says that users must first initiate and start the Huawei Alexa app. Once the app has been launched, users can then ask Alexa various things.

These would include: Acquiring information by asking about famous people, historical dates, and amazing places; locating a restaurant, movie or local business place; ordering from Amazon/ Amazon Prime; control connected smart home features such as appliances, lights, and temperature; hearing traffic or weather updates; and even checking your calendar.

Alexa has more than 10,000 skills to showcase its user, and new Alexa skills are constantly being added all the time, delivering, even more, capabilities for Amazon's AI assistant. With that being said, Alexa will be a great addition to the Huawei Mate 9.
