Many major characters in "Star Wars: Episode VII" were revealed in a picture of the cast reading, but it turns out, there are still a few surprises.

On Monday, the "Star Wars" Twitter account announced that Lupita Nyong'o, and Gwendoline Christie, who plays Brienne of Tarth on "Game of Thrones," have joined the cast. Their characters have yet to be announced, but the news does correct some of the issues that first arose. Many were critical on how few women would be represented in "Episode VII."

"I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII," said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "It's thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape." 

Nyong'o was rumored to be up for a role in March, before the cast photo was released.

One of the possibilities was that she would be one of Obi-Wan Kenobi's descendants, which was described as a "non-Caucasian role."

The Oscar-winner took to Twitter and Instagram to share her news.

"I can finally say it out loud and proud: I'm going to a galaxy far far away!" she said.

Nyong'o's celebrity rose after her award-winning performance in "12 Years a Slave." She's also gained popularity because of her willingness to talk about the struggles she faced as a darker skinned African woman. At the Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon, she delivered a powerful speech.

"I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful," she said. "I put on the TV and only saw pale skin. I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned."

Gwendoline Christie has also been holding her own on "Game of Thrones."

The 6-foot-3 British actress even won over fans after not being ugly enough to play Brienne of Tarth.

"All my life, all I've ever wanted is for people to say -- first of all -- I'm pretty. But 'too pretty?' Is amazing," she said.

She's quickly become a star to watch, as she is also going to be in "Hunger Games: Mockingjay" as Commander Lyme.

She has yet to make an announcement on Twitter, but it's surely just a matter of time.
