Smoke Fills NYC Subway Train; Stranded Passengers Post Photos, Videos on Social Media
New York City subway passengers onboard a Queens-bound 7 train Monday night heard a loud "pop", as people described it, followed by a ball of orange as smoke rushed into the subway wagons. The people on this train and the delayed trains were in for quite the scare.
Late Monday night in the 42nd street Time Square station unsuspecting passengers waited in their seats for one of the busiest subway trains in New York, the 7 train, to leave the station. The Queens bound train never left. After almost half an hour a group of irritated and tired passengers asked the conductor what was going on. He explained there was some sort of fire at the Grand Central Station. "It was a rushing noise, like an airplane was about to ascend, followed by a ball of orange" said Christopher Brito, a PIX 11 production assistant who happened to be on the 7 train at that time. "After that, the cars began to fill with smoke and the train's power was cut off, trapping everyone on board for what must have been a very long seeming 20 minutes".
People took to their social media accounts to post pictures and videos of every New Yorker's worst nightmare, being trapped on a subway. One passenger captioned his photo "Panic and confusion" while another was more expressive with the smoke that filled the wagon. The train was eventually brought back to Grand Central, where it was evacuated. The incident remains a "mystery" as MTA has not released "what really happened" to the public as of yet. Service on the 7 trains was suspended for about an hour, which marks my arrival into last night's events.
Queens bound passengers were forced to travel as a herd onto the only running subway line last night, the E train. The yellow line which also travels through Queens was sealed off and not functioning because of construction, meaning that more than a thousand passengers of 4 subway lines were forced into one train.
From people coming home from restaurant jobs, bars and the red carpet premiere of "The Fault in Our Stars" which was held in NYC last night, this delay was a formula for disaster. After waiting for the E train for nearly 20 minutes (which built up an incredible crowd) people pushed and shoved into the train.
A little girl screamed and cried as she was pushed into a subway wagon full of desperate passengers rushing in. At the next station another large multitude tried to fit in the train where an older man yelled "You don't fit, get out!" in a terrified tone. A passenger held up the train even longer when he wrestled in panic with the train's door and a man trying to push him out. The subway train was so packed that there was no need to hold on to a rail. A passenger even missed his stop since he couldn't reach the door to exit in time.
