Study Says Global Warming Will Be Destructive If the World Do Not Limit Our Emissions
It is estimated that the temperature of the world has already increased by one degree Celsius. The World Meteorological Organization's leader has released a statement saying that there is a possibility that the temperature of the world will increase this century by three to five degrees Celsius more compared to the temperature during the pre-industrial era. It will exceed three times the fixed limits if there are no actions taken to control the increasing emission of greenhouse gases.
The emissions from greenhouse gases had reached a record level in the previous year, said by the United Nations shown in its "Emissions Gap Report". This report had been issued to the public before the conference in Madrid which the United Nations will be attending the following week. The conference aims to encourage the leaders of the world to participate in controlling the occurrence of climate change due to global warming.
The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change had issued a warning to the public about the significant shifts in the global climate if the world will not meet its targets. The needed reduction of the temperate of the world is targeted at 1.5 degrees Celsius more than the levels reported during the pre-industrial era. This is under the covenant made during the Paris Agreement in 2015 which aims to limits global warming by 2 degrees and it was later on changed by experts to 1.5 degrees.
According to a report released by the United Nations' Environment Programme (UNEP), the temperature of the world is forecasted to increase by 3.2 degrees Celsius for this century which is expected to cause great and broad-coverage of destruction caused by the world climate.
According to one of the writers of the report, John Christensen, he doesn't want that type of environment for his grandchildren.
Christensen said that when he thinks of the passage of the 10-year mark, which is the duration of the study that led to the completion of the Emissions Gap Report, it had gotten very alarming. It disappointed him that despite the numerous alerts and reminders given to the public regarding the emissions and global warming, the temperate had still increased over the years. He expects that the temperature of the world has not yet reached its peak.
Based on the statement of WMO's Sec.-Gen. Petteri Taalas, The three degrees of temperature change, the world can lose a significant portion of its agricultural produce. It can greatly affect regions where there is a significant growth in population.
According to the results of the study of UNEP, the tolerable temperature limit which was set during the 2015 Paris Agreement regarding climate change is set at 1.5 degrees Celsius and UNEP believes that it is still possible to be achieved by the world. However, this will require a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 7.6 percent every year from the year 2020 to the year 2030. By setting a limit of two degrees Celsius, this reduces emissions by 2.7 percent.
John Christensen said that there is a need to transform communities in the next ten years for the plan to succeed.
