Drinking Coffee Reduces Dementia Risks, New Study Shows
Most start their day with a cup of coffee on the table. It seems that the day is not complete without drinking even just a glass of it. It helps us to start our day with enthusiasm and full of energy.
It is a common assumption that drinking coffee every day is not good for our health, especially those with caffeine as they are believed to cause insomnia, nervousness, vomiting, increase heart rate, and more. But did you know that drinking coffee also has a positive health effect?
In an article published on Aol.com, a new study from The Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee shows that drinking coffee may help reduce neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
The lead author of the study, and associate professor at Kristianstad University in Sweden, Elisabet Rothenberg said: "Research suggests that a higher intake of coffee and caffeine, up to 5 cups of coffee per day, could act as [a] preventative on [the] risk of developing neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson's disease."
The website Scientific Information of Coffee included six major European Coffee makers. They also added that this is not the first time a study has established the relationship of drinking coffee as a preventive measure towards Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. However, it is recommended by experts that there is a need for more research to establish its significance.
It was also found in a study published in the journal of Frontiers in Neuroscience in 2018, that coffee does possess positive effectivness in preventing neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. In the study, they found that there are components in coffee like phenylindanes that are formed when coffee beans are roasted and they inhibit two protein fragments common in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
However, while the results of some studies associating the positive effect of coffee to prevent Alzheimer's and Parkinson's are promising, the Alzheimer's Society is skeptical about it. They said that the results of the studies cannot distinguish between cause and effect.
Meanwhile, it was also found that coffee has other health benefits. It reduces heart disease, certain cancers, and Type 2 Diabetes. There some studies that show how coffee helps to improve blood sugar. The American Chemical Society's Journal of Natural Products published in their 2015 study that cafestol and caffeic acid help to increase insulin secretion when glucose is added and the cafestol, in particular, helps to increase glucose uptake in muscles.
Provided that coffee has many positive effects, coffee lovers are also reminded that drinking too much coffee can be harmful to your health. Drinking five to six glasses of coffee every day can increase heart diseases by up to 22 percent. It is recommended to drink only 3-5 glasses of coffee or 80 to 400 mg. However, the recommended amount of coffee still does not necessarily mean that it is most likely to be beneficial because it still depends on the person drinking the coffee. Some experience faster heart palpitation.
It also advised not to add sugar or cream in your coffee because it lessens the health benefits. It is very important to note that adding sugar and cream is just like eating a slice of cake every day.
