Brazil's $500-Million Amazon Fund Is Still Under Negotiation With Norway
The Amazon's states of Brazil conducted a meeting on Wednesday of this week with the representatives of Norway, regarding the probable receipt of a $500-million financial assistance for projects that are to help sustain and maintain the Amazon's rainforests if the financial matters of the agreement reach federal levels.
Brazil's Amazon fund had been reserved for the Amazon. It was established in the year 2008 to attain donations for rainforest maintenance and sustainability in the Amazon region. The changes in the fund that the government of Brazil's Environment Minister, Ricardo Salles, had proposed were disagreed by the government of Norway.
According to the Environment Ministry of Norway named Joe Randen, Brazil's Amazon fund is still queued for further agreements.
According to the Governor of the state of Amapa named Valdez Goes, the 9 states of Amazon wish to attain that money directly without any federal agreement intervention. He also said that if the government of Brazil cannot resolve any issues then they have to think about how the consortium of states in Brazil resolves such issues.
The meeting with the government of Norway is just part of the efforts of the states of the Amazon to create a direct connection with countries that are reaching out to help the Amazon rainforests. This is an effort exerted by these states to resolve the issues associated with the leadership of Brazil's current leader, Jair Bolsonaro and his administration regarding the country's fight and prevention against the negative effects of deforestation. The country's reputation regarding this matter is not that good in the international community.
The governors of the different states of the Amazon had also arranged talks with the representatives of different countries to directly connect with them and not on the government of Brazil regarding their granting of donations to Brazil's Amazon fund.
According to a report released yearly by the space research institute, the statistics of the Amazonian deforestation had reached its highest number in nearly ten years. The deforestation of the Amazon had elevated by an estimated 30 percent by July of this year.
Leaders of foreign countries have expressed their dismay at the leadership of Bolsonaro regarding deforestation in the country, especially in the Amazonian region. Bolsonaro's act of going against groups who were exerting great efforts to protect the country's environment had resulted in the disagreement of these foreign leaders in his leadership for the country of Brazil.
Bolsonaro was previously a captain of the army. He had accused of non-profit organizations without evidence that these organizations were the ones responsible for the fires that occurred in the Amazon region of the country that happened in July and August. This was seen as a move of the leader of the country of Brazil to blame others and not on his administration.
The main point of the meetings with Norway for the activation of the $500 million funds for Amazon is the creating of a new governing body with the assistance of Salles.
The governors of the states in the Amazon are distancing themselves from criticisms coming from their government. The state leaders of the Amazon are calling themselves as the "unconditional defenders" of the Amazonian fund and the environment.
