Camilla Cabello Owns Up to Racist Remarks: 'I Was Uneducated and Ignorant'
This week, critics were having a field day after screenshots of the Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello's alleged 'racist' remarks circulated on social media. On Twitter, Camila was in hot water over controversial opinions and 'racist' memes she allegedly made and shared on Tumblr way back in 2012 and 2013.
As of writing this, the said posts were already deleted, but sources claimed that the ex-Fifth Harmony member used the N-word on her old Tumblr account. The screenshots spread like wildfire on social media, and many fans were disappointed with the singer which prompted her to apologize.
Instead of sweeping it under the rug, Camila Cabello was brave enough to issue an apology, albeit long overdue. Since the offensive posts were made on social media, this time, Camila used the platforms to turn things around and correct her past mistakes.
On Wednesday, the 22-year-old pop star addressed her fans and opened up about the issue. She took to Twitter and Instagram to apologize for her past behavior and the cause it might have inflicted on others, which she accounted for her youth and ignorance.
In her statement, the "Señorita" singer expressed her remorse and claimed that she was "deeply embarrassed" for using "horrible and hurtful language."
"When I was younger, I used language that I'm deeply ashamed of and will regret forever. I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and the weight and true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed I ever used it."
In spite of owning up to her past behavior, the singer failed to specify the exact words she was apologizing for. Some critics called her out for this, but until now, the singer is yet to respond.
On the other hand, fans on social media are lauding the 22-year-old pop singer's courage to take responsibility for her mistakes in the past. Today, Camila Cabello used this opportunity to tell her fans that she's a changed person who only stands for "love and inclusivity."
"My heart has never, even then, had any ounce of hate or divisiveness. The truth is I was embarrassingly ignorant and unaware. I use my platform to speak out about injustice and inequality and I'll continue doing that. I can't say enough how deeply sorry and ashamed I feel, and I apologise again from the bottom of my heart."
A Twitter user exposed Cabello's old Tumblr account "vous-etess-belle," which has since been deactivated. In several screenshots, the singer shared and posted racist jokes when she was 15 years old.
According to Cabello, she has since grown as a person and now sees her behavior in a different light. The "Havana" singer claimed that her "mistakes" in the past doesn't represent the person she is now. To further support this point, many fans shared Camila Cabello's support involving fighting racial discrimination.
In the past, the singer has been vocal about her support for certain causes like #BlackLivesMatter. The Cuban-American singer used Twitter to openly express her fight against racial discrimination.
