Salma Hayek Turns Down Selena Role Due to 'Distasteful' Offer
Salma Hayek's new comedy movie, Like A Boss, just opened this month. As she talks about her latest role, the Mexican-American Hollywood actress shared this week that in the 1995, she was offered the lead role of Selena, the film based on the life of slain Texas-born Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla, according to an article by Showbiz Cheet Sheet.
In an interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Hayek explained that she turned the role down because of how soon after Selena Quintanilla's death the film was being planned. The musical icon was murdered by the president of her fan club in 1995.
"They offered it to me like a week after she [Selena Quintanilla] died," said Hayek. "It was a little bit distasteful. They were already planning on making this movie."
When asked if Hayek had seen the film and what she thought of Lopez's performance in the role, she said, "Yes, of course. I think Jennifer did a great job. I really do think it was for her."
Selena was an iconic role for Lopez that led to her snagging even higher-profile film roles including The Wedding Planner, Maid in Manhattan, and her most recent Hustlers.
Meanwhile, in Like A Boss, Hayek plays the role of cosmetics mogul Claire Luna who is the main antagonist. The movie, directed by Miguel Arteta and written by Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly, is about two female friends, played by Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne, who decide to start a beauty company together. Things take a turn for the worse when their benefactor, Salma's character, starts stealing from them.
According to an article by MSN, the 53-year old Mexican-American actress revealed, she wanted to alter her look to fit her role in Like A Boss.
Hayek said at first she planned do Botox and inject her lips which is something she has never done before, but after realizing this procedure is nonreversible, the actress decided to do lip fillers. Although once again, she couldn't go through with it.
"My friend [dermatologist] Dr. [Maurice] Dray said, 'I don't know if you're going to be happy because it's going to hurt super bad.' I said, 'Well, let's give it a try,'" she said. "He put the first needle in my mouth, and I immediately said, 'No! Forget it! I'm done!'"
