Oprah TV Series: Charo Says El 'Cuchi Cuchi' Has Nothing to Do With Sex
Anyone familiar with Charo is familiar with her catchphrase "cuchi cuchi!"
And though it may sound a bit sexual to some, Charo set the record straight. On the latest episode of OWN's "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" series, the flamenco guitarist spoke about her life. The 63-year-old was featured in her home in Beverly Hills where she explained how the phrase came to be, Huffington Post noted.
"What 'cuchi cuchi' came from is such a disappointment for everybody when they know because everybody thinks that is sex," she said. "Cuchillo (knife in Spanish), that was the name of my dog. He was a mix between a St. Bernard and a pit bull. I make a joke about that. First he bite you, and then he run for help. But I call him, 'cuchi cuchi.'"
It's hard to fault people for thinking that the phrase was sexual since she would thrust when she said it. Still, she said it was never meant to be taken that way.
"He have a problem in the back so when the dog wiggle, he don't wiggle like a dog, he wiggle up front, up front I swear," she said. "Never in my mind was sex. Cuchi-Cuchi showed me the way to the bank so thank you very much everybody."
Though Charo and Sofia Vergara have been compared because of their personalities and accents, Charo does not welcome the comparison as a compliment.
Last year, she said, "Sofia Vegara is Charo with diarrhea."
When Sofia Vergara was asked about the comment Charo made, she responded by not being too surprised.
"Of course she doesn't like it. No one likes being compared with someone else, especially someone younger," Vergara told Univision before she walked away.
The episode airs this weekend and will also feature the cast of "The Love Boat," Dave Coulier and D.B. Sweeney.
