Deontay Wilder Hospitalized After Historical Loss to Tyson Fury
Deontay Wilder was hospitalized and was not able to attend the post-fight conference in Las Vegas after he was defeated by Tyson Fury, according to a published report in Business Insider.
Wilder got his first professional defeat in boxing against Tyson Fury. Wilder now holds a record of 42 wins, 41 knockouts, 1 loss, and 1 draw. Meanwhile, Tyson Fury remains undefeated with a record of 30 wins, 21 knockouts, and 1 draw.
This is a very historical comeback and victory for Tyson Fury after he left boxing for almost two years due to alleged addiction and mental illness. However, before his fight, he said that he will have a great comeback by knocking out boxing's most dangerous boxer in a rematch, which he fulfilled on Saturday night.
Tyson Fury is also known as The Gypsy King in the boxing industry and made his first punch of the decade right after the opening bell of the first round on Saturday. He dropped a right hand to the temple of the champion in the third round then put pressure to Wilder with a clubbing left to the body during the fifth round.
It was in the sixth round where Wilder seems to have gotten hurt when his left ear started to bleed and he lost his balance. He also appeared unable to defend himself during this round. According to The Guardian, boxing referee Kenny Bayless waved the fight in the remaining 1 minute and 39 seconds in the seventh round right after Wilder's corner threw in the towel that signals to stop the fight. This stunned the 15, 816 in attendance watching the fight at the MGM Grand Arena.
Meanwhile, Fury serenaded the audience with his rendition of Don MacLean's American Pie after the fight and he also said that Wilder will come back again as a champion, but as for now he said that "The King has returned to the throne."
Wilder did everything to defend his title but he was affected when his left ear started to bleed. The American boxer made 10 defenses of his WBC Heavyweight World Title before he was defeated by British boxer Tyson Fury.
However, it was reported by different news outlets that after the boxing match, Wilder was rushed to the hospital. In a published report in The Athletic, Mike Coppinger said: "Deontay Wilder is headed to a local hospital for examination of an apparent ear injury along with general observation following a knockout defeat and seven rounds of punishment."
Jay Deas, Wilder's long-time trainer, attended the post-fight conference in place of the boxer. He said that Wilder had a tear in the ear and it may be the reason why his equilibrium in the fight was affected. He added: "He's going to get a couple of stitches there."
Before Wilder was rushed to a local hospital, he graciously accepted his defeat. He even said that he was ready to go out of the ring just before his corner threw the towel. In a report from INDEPENDENT UK, he said: "I had a lot of things going on coming into this fight. I make no excuse, I wish my corner let me go out on my shield. No excuses, I will come back and be stronger. Even the greatest loss, that's part of it. You take it for what it is. I had a lot of complications, we'll come back even stronger. This is what heavyweight boxing is all about."
Moreover, Fury was then crowned as the WNC Heavyweight Champion before both of them spoke graciously in the ring.
