Mexico is the New Haven of Netflix in Latin America
Netflix Incorporated, the biggest online video streaming in the world, is moving its Latin American base to Mexico, according to Bloomberg.
It is known to nearly everyone, especially Netflix subscribers, that the biggest online video streaming in the world has been the home of Latin American movies over the past few years. In a previous article by Latin Post, it was reported the different Latin movies that will be streamed on Netflix. This includes the documentary series of Aaron Hernandez, Pablo Escobar, Narcos: Mexico Season 2, and a lot more.
It is undeniable that viewers from Latin America are surging as the years go by. This also gave Netflix the idea that they need to staff foreign employees coming from Latin America because of its growing custumers in the region.
On Friday, Netflix released a statement saying they will consolidate their executives to work in programming, marketing, and publicity across the region in Mexico City and will staff more employees. Meanwhile, Sao Paolo will remain the regional office of Netflix which serves as the Latin American hub.
When Netflix first expanded to Latin America, they struggled a lot because most customers or subscribers don't have credit cards and most countries didn't have internet infrastructures way back in 2011. However, with the growing popularity of the service due to Portuguese and Spanish original series, Netflix has now become one of the favorites of Latin Americans.
At present, it is estimated that there were more than 31.4 million Netflix customers in the region in 2019. This has doubled in the past three years making Latin America priority customers of Netflix.
In a statement that Netflix released, they said that costumers across Latin America have embraced Netflix. They also added that "With Mexico City as our base, we'll be even closer to the creative community as well as members all across the region as we continue to invest in best-in-class content that is loved in Latin America and all over the world."
Netflix has accounted for 90 percent of its growth in the international market in 2019. With the growing population of costumers outside the United States, the company pledged to invest $200 million in Mexican productions in 2020 and that includes La Casa de Las Flores, Diablero, and the most popular program out of Colombia, Siempre Bruja.
Netflix also said that they have produced more than 50 new TV and film projects that are co-produced by Mexicans from 2019 to present. This means, that the plan of Netflix to establish its office in Mexico means to displace dozens of Netflix employees. Moreover, Netflix has also opened offices in Amsterdam, London, Paris, Singapore, Tokyo, and a production office in Spain.
The biggest streaming service in the world has hired employees that specialize in Latin America. People such as publicists, marketers, and programming executives are currently assigned in Los Angeles and other offices. However, in light of the expansion, they have been given two options; either to move to Mexico City or find a new job.
The popularity of Netflix has gone beyond the borders of the United States and this is because of its Latin American customers and Latin American films that are using either Portuguese or Spanish languages as mentioned earlier.
