Jeff Dunham Tour 2014: Achmed the Dead Terrorist Comedian Censored in Malaysia
American ventriloquist and stand-up comedian Jeff Dunham has been forced to censor his controversial ventriloquist act for his performance in Malaysia.
Dunham has been making performance stops all over the world for his "All Over the Map" comedy tour. Virtual Press Office reported that Dunham's "All Over the World" tour is a historic one as the 52-year-old comedian is currently touring across five continents, 12 countries and 19 cities in just over a month. The ending of Dunham's "All Over the Map" tour will result in a culmination of shows from the tour that will air on Comedy Central.
Though Dunham's performances have been met with standing ovations and rave reviews in Israel, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and Tel Aviv, Malaysia's Ministry of Culture and Arts is ordering Dunham to make major changes to his act if he wishes to perform in the country.
WebProNews reported that it is one character in particular that the Malaysian ministry wants Dunham to remove from his ventriloquist act: Achmed the Dead Terrorist puppet.
Though Achmed is a popular character in Dunham's act, it is also controversial. Dunham describes Achmed as an "inept suicide bomber whose love of life harshly conflicts with his own profession." When performing with Achmed, Dunham plays up highly exaggerated stereotypes of Middle Eastern terrorists. Therefore, the Malaysian Ministry of Culture and Arts is requesting that Dunham change Achmed's entire likeness and that his name be changed, WebProNews reported.
Dunham will also be required to omit any virgin or religious references during his show in Malaysia.
So did Dunham oblige with Malaysia's demands? Apparently so.
"While I respect the wishes of our host country, I'm also an American and a firm believer in the freedom of speech," Dunham said to WebProNews. "On the other hand, I wanted to avoid Achmed and getting thrown in jail and being caned."
