Actress Jane Fonda Receives AFI Lifetime Achievement Award: Speech Included Advice for Aspiring Actors
Actress, writer, and political activist Jane Fonda has been added to the list of winners of the AFI Lifetime Achievement award.
On Thursday, Fonda became the 42nd recipient of the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award by a star-studded crowd that included Michael Douglas, Sally Field and Meryl Streep, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
Academy award-winning actor Michael Douglas, who received the same award in 2009, presented Fonda with her own award this time around.
Douglas commented on how great of a multitasker Fonda is and how she is truly "one of a kind."
"I learned that not only is Jane an amazing actress, but she is the world's greatest multitasker," Douglas told the crowd. "She was simultaneously an actress, she was a mom, she was a fitness expert and a brave, very courageous political activist. So, deep down, who really is Jane Fonda? She is one of a kind."
Fonda cheerfully accepted her award and commented that she was happy to add another woman to the list of AFI lifetime achievers.
"In preparing for this experience it required me to do a lot a thinking," Fonda said. "What I've realized is I've been blessed to know many geniuses, real geniuses in our business. I have been blessed to know them and so many are gone now."
Fonda later ended her speech with advice for aspiring actors who wish to "make it" in the business.
"Why didn't I ask them more questions?" Fonda asked the audience.
According to Deadline, Fonda recalled that the only person who actually asked her for advice on movie making was Meryl Streep.
"And I gave her [Meryl] all my tips. She has me to thank. ... Seriously I just want to leave you with this: When you're with people who have been at it a long time ask questions. Stay curious, stay interested. It's much more important to be interested than to be interesting," she said.
Congrats, Jane Fonda!
