Puerto Rican Day Parade 2014 NYC: Live Stream, Route Map & Schedule
"Un Puelbo, Muchas Voces" ("One Nation, Many Voices"). That is what the 80,000 people expected to be marching at this year's Puerto Rican Day parade will be saying.
The 57th annual Puerto Rican Day Parade is today, June 8, and will be celebrated all throughout the streets of NYC from 11 am to 6 p.m., Chiff.com reported.
The large amount of attendees doesn't comes as a surprise. The NYC Puerto Rican Day Parade is reportedly NYC's largest parade and the second biggest public celebration after the Labor Day West Indian American Day Carnival in Brooklyn.
Special Guests
Will you be attending the Puerto Rican Day Parade? If so, expect to see a large lineup of celebrity ambassadors including singers Luis Fonsi and Frankie Negrón, Univision Channel 41 anchorman Jorge Viera, and five-time Emmy winner and Telemundo anchorman Jorge L. Ramos.
There will also be an appearance by child actor Jorge Vega, 9, who appeared in the "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and has been named the rising star of the 2014 parade.
The Grand Marshal participants for today's festivities include Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, D-Brooklyn, and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, D-Bronx.
Newsday reported that there will also be a special tribute to Puerto Rico's beloved poet, Julia de Burgos. Burgos is honored in Puerto Rico for he commitment to feminism and social justice. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico and the University of Havana. In 1942 she came to New York City, where she worked as a journalist living in East Harlem until she died at 39 from pneumonia.
Parade Route
For those of you eager to follow the route of the parade, it will be along Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 79th Street and includes delegates from various towns of Puerto Rico and U.S. states across the country, according to Chiff.com
If you are traveling by subway, simply take the train to the Grand Central stop, and the parade is just a few blocks away.
The 2014 Puerto Rican Day Parade will not only be an exciting one, it will also be a time for the Puerto Rican community to give thanks.
Since reports surfaced that the Parade Board had been misusing their finances and marketing budget, it was unknown whether the parade would continue this year. Thanks to the installment of new board members in February, however, today's parade will go on without a hitch.
"The parade, I think it shows the pride and, and the culture of Puerto Ricans. It shows us getting together, and just really showing that we're proud of our culture and who we are," Parade princess Joanna DeJesus told NY1.
Another gala attendee said, "There were some that thought that the parade would not take place in 2014, and here we are, all dressed up with fancy shoes ready to give people ready to celebrate, the best party and the best parade yet."
