Using statistics gathered by GPS device maker, TomTom, it was determined the city with the worst traffic situation is Los Angeles. Results of the survey were released a week ago in order to have a broader look at the traffic congestion. The study also looked at places in Europe, the rest of the western hemisphere and other parts of the world. In determining the traffic situation, TomTom used methods including measuring the percent increase in travel time during peak hours in each city. Los Angeles topped the list with a time increase of 36 percent, and San Francisco came in next with 32 percent. The rest of the U.S. cities in the top 10 were all within the 20-30 percent range. San Jose and New York are in the middle of the list, both with 26 percent.

It comes as no surprise that Los Angeles topped the list since the city has been known for its notorious traffic in previous years as recorded by the same company. The city should probably start doing something about it because the traffic situation has not gotten any better in recent times. The 36 percent increase is merely an average, and it is still not the worst. An evening commute during rush hour presented a whopping 75 percent increase in travel time. However, this isn't the worst in the western hemisphere as the index suggests that Rio de Janeiro has the worst traffic condition. Sao Paulo and Mexico City also ranked higher than Los Angeles, but many U.S. cities still topped the world's list.

Here is a list of the top 10 U.S. cities with the worst traffic:

1. Los Angeles
2. San Francisco
3. Honolulu
4. Seattle
5. San Jose
6. New York
7. Miami
8. Washington, D.C.
9. Portland
10. New Orleans
