COVID-19 Cases in Latin America
The first nation in the region has recorded its first positive case for the virus in Brazil. Weeks after, some countries in the area had closed their borders and reinforced total lockdown to control the spread and entry of the infectious and deadly virus, according to a recently published article.
Among the countries in the region, Ecuador is badly hit by the virus. There were many reports that corpses were left abandoned on the streets.
Despite the early preparation of the region against COVID-19, they were still affected. At present, Latin America has registered more than 70,000 cases of COVID-19. The pandemic preparedness of the countries in the region varies depending on how vulnerable the state is for the virus.
COVID-19 Cases in Mexico
Even though Ecuador is the hardest-hit nation in the region of COVID-19, Mexico has recorded the highest ratio of cases and death in Latin America.
At present, the country has a total number of more than 8,700 cases and with a death toll of 712. This has led some hospitals in the country to turn away their patients who are possibly carrying the virus. This means that many died in their homes and were not correctly diagnosed hospitals.
Moreover, Iztapalapa is the most affected municipality in the city. Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico City said that the General Hospital is now at full capacity, and they are now turning away their patients. They are redirecting the patients to nearby hospitals, but they too are full.
Mexico City is the home of 8.8 million people, and they have registered more than 2,000 COVID cases and with a death toll of nearly 200.
A news article says that Mexico is very slow in responding to the threat brought by COVID-19. It can be remembered that President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador posted a video of himself surrounded by children less than a month ago. He even urged the Mexicans to go out and visit the restaurants.
However, the country has now slowly reacted to the effect of COVID-19 and claiming that more people have been tested. But, according to the data gathered by a news outlet, Mexico has the highest ration of cases and deaths in Latin America. It suggests that the country is not doing enough in identifying COVID-19 cases.
Moreover, Obrador posted on his Twitter account that U.S. Pres. Donald Trump has promised to send the country more than 1,000 ventilators by the end of this month.
