To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day and to honor those that served and sacrificed during World War II, Lone Star Flight Museum is organizing a flyover event across Houston.

According to a recent article, the event dubbed, "Fight to the Finish" will take place at noon on May 8.

As the world faces the crisis brought by COVID-19, the flyover is a timely event to put a smile on the faces of Americans.

"While it is the mission of the museum to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII, the Lone Star Flight Museum and its partners felt compelled to lift the spirits of the Houston community while we fight COVID-19," the museum said in a statement.

Fight to the Finish was originally a nod to the efforts of those that fought in World War II, but today has even more significance that anyone could have imagined.

According to its website, the Fight to the Finish Flyover will strictly follow all social distancing orders and guidelines. Organizers of the Houston flyover asks the public to stay home and prevent gathering in the public viewing areas such as the Ellington Airport and the Lone Star Flight Museum. The museum is also closed to the public.

"We encourage everyone to step outside and enjoy a moment of patriotic distraction and marvel at the rare WWII warbirds flying overhead, all from the safety of their own homes," said museum president and CEO Douglas H. Owens.

Fight to the Finish will feature nearly 30 rare and historic aircraft across the area, according to a statement on the museum's website.

The aircrafts will fly over 20 communities across the Houston area including Pasadena, San Jacinto Museum & Monument, University of Houston, Downtown Houston, Memorial Park Conservancy, Acres Homes, Houston National Cemetery, Spring-Cypress, Cinco Ranch, Mission Bend, West Memorial, West University Place, Bellaire, Missouri City, Alvin, Pearland, Friendswood, Dickinson, Kemah, and many communities within the flight plan.

The areal show will begin with an 11:45 a.m. take-off from Ellington Airport until 1:40 p.m. However, if the weather won't be favorable for Friday's flyover, organizers will fly on Saturday morning instead.

The fleet is expected to include a B-25 'Devil Dog', Grumman HU-16 Albatross, P-51 Mustang, P-63 King Cobra, SB2C Helldiver, North American T-28 Trojan, CAF Tora Group, C-45 Twin Beech, T-6 Texan, BT-13 Valiant, L-17 Navion, T-34 Mentor, Yak 52. However, the aircraft lineup is subject to change.

The Lone Star Museum also announced through their Facebook page that the public can have the chance to place the photos of their WWII veteran loved ones in the warbirds participating in the Houston flyover.
