Mexico City Police Chief Omar Hamid Garcia Harfuch was seriously injured in an attempt assassination to him on early Friday morning that happened in a wealthy neighborhood.
Mexico City Police Chief said that they were headed to a daily security meeting with the City Mayor when his black SUV was trapped and blocked by shooters at around 6:30 a.m. on the famous avenue Paseo de la Reforma in the Miguel Hidalgo Municipality.
Garcia Harfuch immediately wrote on his Tweeter account after he was hospitalized due to the gunshot wounds he has to the shoulder, clavicle, and knee. He alleged that the CJNG executed the assassination and described the notorious cartel as cowards.
Meanwhile, he also wrote that two of his bodyguards died and a woman who happened to be driving nearby while delivering food was also killed. The Mexico City Police Chief is now urging to continue to confront the organized criminal group.
Condition of the Mexico City Police Chief
After the attempt assassination, Mexico City Police Chief was immediately rushed to the nearby hospital. According to a published report in NBC News, the Police Chief is now in a stable condition and is guarded by Mexico's National Guard.
Meanwhile, Mexico's Security Minister Alfonso Durazo said that an investigation is ongoing before they can be certain that it was the CJNG who attempted to assassinate the Police Chief. Moreover, CCTV cameras captured the said incident that will help the progress of the investigation.
Following the said assassination, at least a dozen suspects who were alleged as members of the notorious Mexican Drug Cartel CJNG were detained, according to Mexico City's Attorney General's Office. However, the cartel's leader Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, who is also the top DEA wanted with a bounty of $10 million, remains hiding.
Increased Cooperation Between Mexican Authorities and U.S. DEA
The attempt assassination of the alleged members of CJNG to the Mexico City Police Chief led to a series of cooperation between Mexican authorities and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, according to a published report in Courier Journal.
It can be recounted that Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador froze bank accounts and assets that were suspected related to the cartel. The said bank account and assets were estimated to be around more than $1 billion.
Meanwhile, the DEA has announced a bounty reward of $10 million in the previous months for anyone who can give any information about the whereabouts of CJNG leader El Mencho. Additionally, it is believed that El Mencho is still in Mexico and is guarded by heavily armed men.
While El Mencho remained hiding from the Mexican authorities and the U.S. DEA, his son and daughter were jailed earlier this year in the U.S. facing and awaiting for the federal charges filed against them.
