Woman Mauled to Death by a Shark in Maine
A woman died swimming off Maine on what appears to be a shark attack as per the investigators, Monday. The Maine Department of Marine Resources reported that the victim was swimming off the shore of Bailey Island in Casco Bay when she was injured based on the witness' statement to the Maine Marine Patrol. The details of the victim including her name is being withheld for the notification of her family.
About 3:30 PM, a Coast Guard official mentioned something about a possible shark attack off Harpswell. The report of NBC affiliate News Center Maine reported that the Coast Guard didn't reach Harpswell.
The witness said that kayakers nearby brought the victim to shore, and EMS responders were called to the scene. The woman was pronounced deceased, as per CNN. The global database of a shark attack, International Shark Attack File, only listed one shark attack in the state. The local police official said that the incident was a fluke event, and they will not shut down the beaches for one sighting only.
This latest shark attack that led to the death of the woman is currently under investigation by the Maine Marine Patrol, and no other information was added. According to the Maine Department of Marine Resources, boaters and swimmers are merged to take precautionary measures in the area and to avoid swimming near fish or seal schooling.
The shark attacks are rare for the state of Maine. The first incident happened way back in 2010, according to the CNN news partner, CBC. The incident reportedly happened when a porbeagle shark attacked a commercial diver in the Bay of Fundy.
The previous incident was captured on a video. However, the diver was uninjured, and officials believed that the diver's camera was mistakenly thought to be food by the shark, according to CBC.
New England shark expert, James Sulikowski, reported the first recorded unprovoked shark attack in Maine to Portland Press Herald. In an interview byThe Star, Sulikowski, who researches for Arizona State University, also said that a shark could mistake a person for food.
In Massachusetts, the first deadly shark attack for 80 years happened in 2018. A man boogie boarding in Wellfleet was attacked by a shark and was reported dead according to NECN. Since then, beaches in Massachusetts have been closed for shark sightings multiple times a day in late summer-- the season when sharks are commonly found in the area.
