A Zoom class started fine for a Florida student's first day of online learning on Tuesday morning until the teacher heard shouting and tragedy began to unfold.

The Florida student's mother was shot in the middle of the Zoom class, interrupting the call. She was shot in front of the student, and five other children aged 10 to 17 in the Indiantown, Florida home, reported NBC News.

While this happened, the teacher was left to watch through the Zoom call how the student reacted to her mother's death.

The teacher told authorities that the 10-year-old reacted to shouting behind her. The teacher then realized that a domestic disturbance was happening.

According to the New York Post, the student was muted, so the other students didn't have to hear what was happening. It didn't go unnoticed, though, that the child put her hands up to her ears while still online.

It was a clear indication that she reacted to a gunshot. Immediately after that, the screen went blank. Authorities think this is because the computer was hit with a projectile.

BBC noted that the victim, 32-year old Maribel Rosado Morales, was with her four children and two young cousins at the time of the shooting.

The girl attended Warfield Elementary School and was doing online classes since the coronavirus pandemic forced Florida schools to go online.

Who shot the mother?

According to Martin County Sheriff William Snyder, she was shot by an angry ex-boyfriend Donald Williams, 27.

As far as the police know, Williams went to the home to confront his ex about a Facebook video.

He then fled the scene by bicycle before boarding a city bus. He demanded the driver to drop him off at a neighborhood that was not on route. This prompted the driver to get suspicious and call the police.

Williams was arrested by a Swat team who happened to be training near the area at the time. The sheriff said there was a "full confession" given by the suspect.

In their report, The Hill said that Williams had been taken into custody that same day and faces charges of first-degree murder and felony offenses for possession of a gun.

Snyder added that there would be armed burglary and home invasion charges too. Since there were children present during the alleged crime, there may be more penalties set on Williams.

It is not yet clear if he already has an attorney.

What happens to the children now?

The sheriff believes that most of the children saw Morales get shot. But, while the investigation is still under active investigation, the district promised to respect the teacher and students' privacy.

The Martin County School District extended its deepest sympathies to the victim's family, especially the children who witnessed it.

Meanwhile, the Warfield Elementary School said they would deploy a grief team to assist students and staff who felt the impact of the incident. "We stand ready to assist and offer support in any way we can," the school said.

The Florida Department of Children and Families will be assigned to find new homes for the victim's children, investigators said.
