Reds Suspends Broadcaster Thom Brennaman for Using Anti-Gay Slur On Air
The longtime Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman has been suspended from broadcasting Cincinnati's games for using the anti-gay slur on air on Wednesday night.
The Cincinnati Reds immediately suspend their longtime TV broadcaster Thom Brennaman after he used anti-gay slur on Wednesday night. The incident led the Cincinnati Reds to ask an apology to the LGBTQ+ community for the horrific and homophobic remark of Thom Brennaman.
According to a published article in ESPN, Thomas Brennaman used anti-gay slur after the Fox Sports Ohio returned from a commercial break during the first game of a doubleheader at Kansas City. The broadcaster did not seem to realize that he was already on air.
Following this, Reds decided to take Brennaman off broadcasting the fifth inning during the second game. Jim Day, his alternate play-by-play man replaced him. Additionally, Thom Brennaman and the team asked an apology to the LGBTQ+ community.
The team said in a statement that they are devastated by the horrific and homophobic remark that Thom Brennaman made during the game. They also added that the Reds decided to pull him off the air and was suspended immediately.
The Cincinnati Reds also assured that they will be addressing the broadcasting team in the coming days to make sure that same incident will not happen anymore.
The organization explained "In no way does this incident represent our players, coaches, organization, or our fans. We share our sincerest apologies to the LGBTQ+ community in Cincinnati, Kansas City, all across this country, and beyond.
Moreover, Fox Sports Ohio said that they also agreed with the suspension of Thom Brennaman. They described Brennaman's remark as "hateful, offensive and in no way reflects the values" of the network.
It is still not clear as to when the suspension of Thom Brennaman will last or if it will be permanent. Moreover, Brennaman said that he knew that he hurt anyone and deeply asked an apology to the LGBTQ+ community.
