EF Pro Cycling Team: Not Tour de France 2020 Favorite but Hopes to Pull off a Surprise
EF Pro Cycling Team may not be the favorite in the Tour de France 2020 but if there was a team capable of pulling off a surprise, it would be this U.S.registered team.
The team may be the underdogs in this tour but its trio of Colombian riders, Rigoberto Uran, Dani Martinez and Sergio Higuita, are all capable of pulling off an upset especially in the mountain stages, according to a report by Cycling News.
Other members of the team are Tejay van Garderen, Jens Keukeleire, Alberto Bettiol and two rookies in Neison Powless and Hugh Carthy will round out the team.
The team's young but exuberant riders are balanced by the experienced veterans with Uran having finished six Tours that included a second finish in 2017.
Back in 2017, Uran almost upset Britain's Chris Froome, handing the four-time tour champion his slimmest winning margin at only 54 seconds.
Dark Horse of the Tour
As the 107th edition of the tour finally rolls off from August 29 to September 30, all eyes would be on Ineos Grenadiers' Egan Bernal of Colombia and Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic of Slovenia.
But EF Pro Cycling Team is fine with that as they seem to draw strength from being the underdogs, from being the dark horse.
As Business Insider reported, Jonathan Vaughters, the team boss, said that they are the darkest of dark horses and it is where the team fits in.
Vaughters added that their riders' place is not alongside the leaders such as Bernal and Roglic as that will not be their tactic to win the race.
Also, he admitted that his riders will not have the horsepower to go neck-to-neck with the leaders.
Rather, their riders will be at the back of the peloton wherein they will be on the lookout for crucial moments to arise and grab on it.
These will be the moments that they will be exploiting to get an upset, said Vaughters.
Trail of Upsets
Vaughter's riders seem to relish in such situations.
Like when Martinez pulled an upset to win the Criterium du Dauphine two weeks ago.
Winning this race is a major boost because the week-long Criterium du Dauphine is a tuneup to the Tour de France.
Or, when the team won the Tour Colombia back in February with Higuita leading the win and doing so at the expense of compatriot Bernal, the Tour de France defending champion.
The team can even pull off upsets in one day races such as last year when Bettiol dominated Belgium's biggest race, the Tour of Flanders.
While those victories will not automatically transform them into Tour contenders, it sends the message that they have the potential to pull off an upset.
However, if the EF Pro Cycling Team thinks they are under the radar, they should think again because other teams already know what they are capable of, according to a report by VeloNews.
