The U.S. Government handed out stimulus checks of $1,200 to adults, and $500 for each of their dependents as part of the CARES Act approved in March.

However, the first stimulus checks for dependents stipulated that only those under 16 years old qualify for the $500 relief aid.

As a result, about 13 million dependents aged 17 to 24 years old could not get their own COVID-19 relief aids.

The 17-24 age-group was excluded because the CARES Act was based on the tax-code definition that a qualifying child dependent is one that has not reached the age of 17 years old.

Even when they were still in senior high or college and entirely dependent on their parents, they were not included in the stimulus checks.

Because they were claimed by their parents as dependents even when they were already in college or have their jobs, they still could not get their stimulus checks as an adult.

At the age of 18, most Americans can already vote, have their own driver's license and drive, choose to serve the military, go to college, or have a full-time job.

Some of them are even living on their own, basically, most things that adults can do. Thus, the effects of COVID-19 pandemic are basically also the same for them. 

These young adults, according to a report on CNBC, are speaking out in an effort to change this policy because, according to them, they were also very much affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. And they also need federal aid.

However, there are ways that the 17-24 years old may be eligible to receive the first stimulus checks of $1,200. They may be qualified except that they did not know it, according to an article on Cnet.

For the sake of this article, let us refer to the 17-24 age-group as a young adult.

Thus, if the young adult is not claimed as a dependent, has filed his own 2019 taxes, and has an adjusted gross income of under $75,000, then they are qualified for the first stimulus checks.   

Or, if by this year the young adult has become financially independent and by spring 2021 they will be able to file their tax return then, they should qualify for the first stimulus checks and should be able to receive $1,200 sometime in 2021.

Another is if they serve the U.S. Army or if they are married or have their child.

All these will qualify them provided that the young adult, as mentioned above, is not claimed by their parents as their dependent, and will be able to file their tax return in 2021 also, that they met all the other requirements to qualify for the COVID-19 relief aid.

If they qualify for the first stimulus checks as an adult, they will most likely qualify for the second, if one will be approved.

However, according to an article on the Latin Post, a second stimulus check is most likely to be had only after the November 3 General Election.
