Mike McCarthy Continues “Love Affair” With AT&T Stadium
Mike McCarthy continues his "love affair" with the AT&T Stadium as he extended his winning streak to 5-0 there following the Dallas Cowboys last-minute comeback to nail their first home win on Sunday, September 20.
Mike McCarthy entered the AT&T Stadium with a 4-0 record. And, for a while it had looked like that streak was finally going to end with the Cowboys committing three turnovers in the first quarter alone that had them staring at a 20-point deficit.
However, the Cowboys once again orchestrated one of the greatest comebacks as they got themselves out of the hole that they dug and edged Atlanta Falcons, 40-39, and allowed their head coach McCarthy to keep a clean record at the AT&T Stadium.
Even McCarthy is in disbelief with the victory which allowed the Cowboys to avoid the dreaded 0-2 start. They had lost their season opening game against the Los Angeles Rams, 20-17.
McCarthy said that he has never had it like that, not the disastrous start nor was the heroic comeback.
Not only was it his first home win but it was his first win as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Mike McCarthy's victories at the AT&T Stadium may include the Super Bowl XLV with the Green Bay Packers but his fifth win there is certainly one for the books.
McCarthy's fifth win at the AT&T Stadium gave him his 126th career win in total.
And, as if it could not get any better than that, the Cowboys' comeback victory was witnessed by a crowd of 21,708, an NFL record for attendance amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fans were credited by quarterback Dak Prescott who said that their presence made a huge difference because they had stayed and did not give up on them.
Prescott was a huge factor in the victory. He completed 34 of 47 passes for 450 yards. He also had one touchdown pass and three touchdown runs.
He is the first player in the history of the NFL to run for three touchdowns and pass for over 400 yards in a game.
Mike McCarthy said that Prescott had a very strong performance. Their first quarter performance was tough on a quarterback but the head coach said that Prescott had stayed composed.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott said that Prescott was just fearless and that no matter what the score was, the quarterback had the same mentality. And, that is to be as clutch as he was and make the plays he made.
According to Prescott, the halftime pep talk that coach Mike McCarthy had given them had done so much.
With the score at 29-10, McCarthy had told his boys that they needed to be in that situation so they can find out who they were. And, the Dallas Cowboys responded by showing just how resilient they can be.
Mike McCarthy said that he is proud of everyone and that he cannot say enough about how the players just kept on playing despite the odds against them.
