Cam Newton Tests Positive for COVID-19, Patriots vs Chiefs Rescheduled
Cam Newton, the New England Patriots no.1 quarterback, has tested positive for COVID-19 prompting their much-awaited Sunday, October 4, game against Super Bowl LIV champions Kansas City Chiefs to be rescheduled.
In a statement released on Saturday, October 3, the Patriots had written that they received a notice that a Patriots player has been confirmed to have the COVID-19 infection and that the player has immediately gone into self-quarantine.
Cam Newton is not the only NFL player though for Sunday's game who has tested positive as the NFL also released a statement on Saturday that there are also players on the Chiefs side who have tested positive for COVID-19.
The game has been rescheduled to either Monday or Tuesday as the NFL awaits for more test results.
The Patriots statement though also stated that Cam Newton's teammates, coaches and team staff have also been tested but so far, all of them have returned negative results.
In a virtual meeting on Saturday night, the Patriots have been told that the current plan will have them playing the Chiefs on Monday.
The Chiefs had not announce who among their players have tested positive but a source told ESPN that Jordan Ta'amu, their practice squad quarterback, has been confirmed to be also infected.
Patriots fans are bummed to learn that Cam Newton has been infected with the virus.
The 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player has taken over Tom Brady's role after the later departed during free agency.
Cam Newton, however, has proven that he was worth the $7.5 million one-year deal as he has led the Patriots to a 2-1 start this season. He has been 62-of-91 for 714 yards, with two touchdown passes and two interceptions. He has also added 35 rushes for 149 yards and four touchdowns.
Patriots fan Nathan Ko told CBS Boston that Newton is the Patriots' only hope, and now that COVID-19 has got him, it is a depressing situation.
Another fan, Doreen Keville, said she is bummed and a bit concerned about everything because it could be the start of everything with Cam Newton being the quarterback.
Gabriel Soto said that he drove all the way up from New Jersey because he wanted to see Newton play. He said it is dreadful and upsetting.
The Patriots vs Chiefs is the second NFL match that has been rescheduled due to the COVID-19 this week.
Earlier, the Tennessee Titans vs Pittsburgh Steelers was also postponed due to COVID-19 cases outbreak.
Brian Hoyer will be starting in place of Cam Newton. He has been the Patriots active backup quarterback for the first three games of this season. Jarrett Stidham is third on the list.
This is the first time this season that the Patriots have been affected by the COVID-19. They have not yet put anyone on the reserve/COVID-19 list, that is until Cam Newton.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has said that their team is fortunate to have a good depth for the quarterback position as they also have Jake Dolegala on the practice squad.
