Trump Goes on Motorcade to Greet Supporters Outside Hospital
President Donald Trump has surprised his supporters gathered outside the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center by going on a motorcade to greet them on the evening of Sunday, October 4.
Trump has been confined at the military hospital since Friday, October 2, where he is undergoing treatment for a COVID-19 infection.
A crowd of Trump supporters have been growing across the street from the military hospital in the last few days. They were waving Trump flags while some were carrying signs that were handmade.
In a video, a masked Trump, wearing a blue jacket and white shirt with no tie can be seen waving from the backseat of a vehicle.
The video appeared right after the president had tweeted a video wherein he said that he is planning to pay a little surprise visit to the Trump supporters, whom he called great patriots, gathered outside on the street.
In a statement, Judd Deere, the deputy White House press secretary said that President Trump had taken a short, last-minute motorcade ride to wave to his supporters gathered outside the hospital.
Deere added that Trump has now returned to Walter Reed's Presidential Suite wherein he will be working while undergoing treatment.
In the 73-second video that Trump tweeted before his motorcade, he said that he has learned a lot about the virus while being treated for it in the hospital.
According to the president, he learned about COVID-19 by really going to school, that it is not just a "let's read the book school" but a real school.
He added that COVID-19 is a very interesting thing and he gets it, he understands it, and that he will be letting people know about it.
While Trump supporters appreciated the effort that the president made, the motorcade had also drawn some flak especially that two Secret Service agents could be seen inside the vehicle with him. Both were wearing a mask though.
COVID-19 patients are generally required to go on a 14-day quarantine as that is the incubation period of the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the disease. This is done to prevent transmitting the viral disease to others.
The U.S. has the highest number of COVID-19 infection worldwide with 7 million as well as having the highest number of deaths at more than 200,000.
Meanwhile, there has been concerns of the effect of Trump's COVID-19 infection to the U.S. economy.
When Trump had announced early on Friday morning that he and first lady Melania Trump were positive with COVID-19, the markets had taken a slump.
BTIG equities and derivatives head Julian Emanuel said that in the next few days, the markets will be looking out for updates on Trump's health, how he will be communicating to the public, his appearance in public, and even the volume of his tweets will be watched.
Trump's doctors revealed that dexamethasone has been added to the president's COVID-19 treatment.
