FX 'American Horror Story' Season 4 Cast, Clues & Premiere: Sarah Paulson Talks 'Freak Show' Character and 'Hybrid' Tone [Pic]
Sarah Paulson has just two words to describe the script for "American Horror Story: Freak Show": "Holy s**t!"
That was Paulson's first reaction to reading the first script, she said in interview with E! News last week. The next chapter of "American Horror Story" takes place in the 1950s in Jupiter, Florida. It will center around one of the last freak shows left in the United States. On Thursday, Paulson revealed that she will play a two-headed lady.
"So excited to be playing Bette AND Dot this season. Two heads are better than one! #AHSFREAKSHOW," she said via Twitter with a picture of her in freak form.
Paulson also told E! News that her character has her doing "a lot of physical things."
"It's very exciting and totally nerve-wracking in the best way because you think, 'How the hell am I going to pull this off?!' And as an actor, I think that's an exciting thing to feel," she said.
According to Paulson, the upcoming season is a "kind of beautiful hybrid between 'Coven' and 'Asylum.'" In late May, creator Ryan Murphy said "Freak Show" was turning out to be more similar to the darker tone of "Asylum."
"There's going to be a little bit of a richer and potentially darker tone the way 'Asylum' had, but with the humor infused from 'Coven,'" Paulson explained. "When you add Kathy Bates to the story, she's so funny, and Emma Roberts was so funny last year as Madison, I just think it's going to be a really beautiful mix of both."
According to TV Guide, Bates and Evan Peters will play freaks. Angela Bassett will be a freak (but not the bearded lady). Season four is Jessica Lange's last; she will star as a German woman managing the freak show. Denis O'Hare revealed that he plays "a collector of freaks." In late March, Murphy announced the addition of new cast member Michael Chiklis as Bates' ex-husband and Peters' father.
"[Murphy's] interests tend to go towards the female and the intricacies of the female heart and mind, and I love him so much for that because, boy, he has thrown the ball at me in a really beautiful way," Paulson continued. "I worship at the altar of Ryan Murphy, and I always will."
"American Horror Story: Freak Show" premieres on FX in October. Filming for Season 4 will take place in New Orleans, E! News reports.
