IRS Urges Public to File Federal Benefits Before the Extended Deadline
The Internal Revenue Service or IRS is urging qualified beneficiaries for $500 dependent payments to register. The announcement was made after the agency extended the deadline.
The IRS has sent more than nine million letters across the country who are qualified to receive federal aids like s dependent payment. This is now the third time that the agency has decided to extend the registration deadline for such relief aid.
According to a published article in The Hill, the IRS announced on Monday that they are extending the registration until Nov. 21 using the IRS's non-filer web tool to claim the $500 dependent claim. Qualified individuals are those who age 17 years old and below.
The IRS clarified that they intended to extend the deadline to give the recipients of the federal benefit more time to avail the relief aid. Most of the beneficiaries have already received their $1,200 direct stimulus checks but have not yet received the dependent payments.
Aside from those who already received direct stimulus, qualified individuals include recipients of Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, railroad retirement benefits, and veterans' benefits who did not file tax returns for 2018 and 2019.
Moreover, the IRS automatically issued dependent payments after the CARES Act was signed into law. However, many did not receive it because they were not able to register using the tool that the website set for them. This is one way for them to receive their $500 dependent payments.
The IRS also explained that the extension of the new deadline is due to the updates that the agency made in their program. It can be remembered that the IRS first set the deadline from Oct. 15 then they changed it to Nov. 21.
Most of those who will receive the dependent payments are those who were not able to file their 2018 and 2019 tax return. Many of the recipients also are those who did not file their taxes because of their low income. However, the agency already clarified that they still are qualified for relief aids.
Meanwhile, it is still not clear how many of the nine million of those who received the letters from the IRS qualified for the dependent payments. But the agency wants to send it to those who deserve to have financial assistance amid the global pandemic.
The Internal Revenue Service also asserted that if the dependent payments will not be claimed it will be automatically credited as they file the 2020 tax returns next year. This means that qualified recipients can choose to either claim the dependent payments or not.
Unfortunately, it is still not clear until today if the second round of stimulus package that includes direct stimulus checks, doubled the amount of dependent payments, and Paycheck Protection Program will be signed into law before the U.S. election.
Though there are some speculations that there might be a deal within this week after Pres. Trump said that he will immediately sign any form of the stimulus package. It is also too early to be conclusive that the stimulus deal is already dead.
