Police had taken into custody a man allegedly involved in a fatal stabbing spree at a San Jose church in California on Sunday night.

Police said Monday that a man and a woman died in the stabbing attack, while three men were taken to hospitals but now in stable conditions.

According to the San Jose Police Department, cops responded to the Grace Baptist Church past 7 p.m. and found five people with at least one stab wound each.

Police said they caught one adult male. However, the motive and circumstances that lead to the stabbing rampage remain unclear since it is still under investigation.

San Jose Police Sgt. Christian Camarillo said the suspect is "a very motivated individual" that he was able to stab five people.

"This isn't like a shooting. To stab somebody, you have to get up close and personal," Camarillo said in a KPIX report.

Police said the church serves as an overnight shelter for the homeless, and that no church services were being held at the time. Police tweeted that homeless people were also brought to the church to get them out of the cold.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said they had lost two community members and he prays for the recovery of the three individuals seriously injured in the attack.

Liccardo added that they would keep the community updated for more information about the arrested suspect.

"Our hearts are torn for the victims and their loved ones in last night's horrific stabbing at Grace Baptist Church on 10th Street," Liccardo said in a The New York Post report.

Meanwhile, those who knew the two victims, Nguyen Pham and James Chaney, described them as someone who lives to serve others.

Pham and Chaney came to Grace Baptist Church to spend the evening planning an upcoming memorial for the unhoused. The two are both survivors of the attack and said they remain committed to helping the homeless.

The San Jose Police Department has yet to identify the attacker, but the Mercury News reported him as 32-year-old Fernando Jesus Lopez, who was a Grace Baptist regular. 

Lopez was reported to have a history of domestic violence.

Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner Dr. Michelle Jorden has yet to release the names of the deceased victims.

A GoFundMe crowdfunding page was set up for Pham. On the page, Jenny Do described him as a community hero who has worked tirelessly to support the communities most in need, as reported by San Jose Inside.

The GoFundMe campaign has managed to raise about $24,000 of its $30,000 goal from more than 300 donors as of late Tuesday.

Pham manages the Work2Future job training program for San Jose's Office of Economic Development. However, he spends most of his own time running a charity for children in his home country Vietnam and helping unhoused people in Silicon Valley.

Huy Tran said it is no surprise that the community is helping his friend in any way they can. Tran said Pham is one of those guys with a huge heart.
