Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently unveiled her new merchandise collection online, but she received a huge backlash following its release.

On Wednesday night, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that pre-orders are now open and posted four photos of the products, including three tees and a sweatshirt with "trendy" slogans. 

Among the four, the sweatshirt with the "Tax the Rich" print caught the attention of many because of its high price tag. The sweatshirt initially costs $65 but was later price down to $58.

The 31-year-old first-term congresswoman has described herself as a "democratic socialist" that campaigns for anti-capitalism, and by selling her merchandise with hefty price tags, many netizens have deemed her a "hypocrite." 

One critic tweeted: "Oh capitalism thought you hated it." "Socialist in the streets, capitalist in the tweets," another netizen said.

Another netizen tweeted: "The irony of using capitalism to complain about capitalism." Another critic added that "socialists use capitalism to promote" their agendas and campaigns.

Several netizens not only cited the merchandise's expensive price tags, they even posted photos of the products that include the four portrait buttons for $10, dog collars for $17, and caps for $28.

Daily Wire editor Ben Shapiro said that only the rich could afford to buy the said sweatshirt. Another person tweeted that the politician is not taxing the rich; she is overcharging the stupid.

Twitter user @MattsIdeaShop, on the other hand, tweeted that the sweatshirt should just say "Tax Me," as reported by The New York Post.

In response to her critics, Ocasio-Cortez justified the items' costs by saying that they do not use "slave-wage labor" and they create dignified union jobs for people across the country. She also took a hit at President Donald Trump and his supporters.

As per a The Daily Mail report, she tweeted: "Republicans are freaking out bc we don't use slave-wage labor for merch that funds grassroots organizing."

Ocasio-Cortez noted that the difference between Trump's merchandise and hers was that her items are made in the United States. There were reports that Trump's "MAGA" products are made in China.

The Democratic congresswoman also shared the tweet of Stephen Punwasi, who called himself "former mass-market apparel designer." 

Punwasi wrote that the merchandise's prices "sounds about right" because they were "made in America and union printed." He said that's what it costs to pay everyone a decent wage.

The proceeds of the merchandise do not go to a charity. Instead, a disclaimer on Ocasio-Cortez's website said that purchases are campaign contributions.

But in her tweet, the New York congresswoman stressed that the proceeds would fund grassroots organizing.

Ocasio-Cortez, who earns a six-figure congressional income, earlier said that "capitalism is irredeemable." She also called for increased taxes for billionaires in New York.

Meanwhile, a Boston Herald report noted that a worker producing goods for others to sell and make money is, by principle, a capitalist.
