Texas state Rep. Kyle Biedermann wants to introduce a referendum that will allow Texans to vote for secession or make the state an independent nation because he believed that the federal government is out of control.

Texas is the second-largest state in the U.S. in terms of land area. The state also has a crucial role in controlling and stopping the illegal migrants through its borders.

The Texas lawmaker is now planning to file a bill that would greenlight the potential referendum that would allow Texans to vote if they want the state to be separated from the country.

Texas Lawmaker Files Referendum to Separate Texas in the U.S.

Biedermann wants to propose a bill to allow vote on secession from the U.S. This was after he said that the federal government is out of control and does not represent the Texans' values.

He even posted his plan on his social media account. He wrote: "That is why I am committing to filing legislation this session that will allow a referendum to give Texans a vote for the State of Texas to reassert its status as an independent nation."

However, separating Texas will greatly affect the Texans in the future, particularly in terms of the COVID-19 vaccine funding if they agree to be separated.

According to a published article in Fox News, Biedermann said that his bill would rely on Article 1 Section 2 of the Texas Constitution. The section stipulates that "all political power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are founded on their authority, and instituted for their benefit."

It is still unclear if this bill will be prioritized in the House of Representatives as lawmakers' topmost priorities at the moment are the COVID-19 relief bill and the $1.4 trillion catchall spending bill expected to be approved next week.

Lawmakers have recently voted to extend another one week before adjourning both Houses. The Texas lawmaker said the Texans' faith stands pledged to preserve a republican form of government.

And subject to this limitation only, he added that the people of Texas have at all times the inalienable right to alter, abolish or reform their government "in such manner as they may think expedient."

Groups that Support Biedermann's Proposal

Some groups vocally support the plan to secede Texas from the U.S. These groups include the Texas Nationalist Movement, which has long supported calls and efforts to separate Texas, and another one is the 87th Texas Legislature, which has seen hundreds of motions presented to them in the past.

It was not the first time that a lawmaker calls to secede Texas from the U.S. But this will hurt Texas since the global pandemic negatively impacts the state. The unemployment rate in the state is also very high.

Even though Biedermann has revealed his plan, the proposal's details were not yet made clear to the public.

It can be remembered that Texas has once left the union known as the United States of America before. After it became a state in 1845, Texas seceded from the U.S. in February 1861 and joined the Confederate States of America in March 1861.
