Oprah Winfrey, 'A Different World': Cast Reunited, Series a Spin-Off of 'The Bill Cosby Show'
"A Different World" cast reunited last week for a taping of Oprah Winfrey's "Where Are They Now?" show. This would make the first "A Different World," the 1990s hit African-American comedy sitcom, reunion in 20 years.
Winfrey cannot take all the credit for this reunion. Show creator Debbie Allen was instrumental in bringing most of the cast back together. With this reunion, perhaps it means a reboot of "A Different World." Allen sure hopes so.
Allen stated that she has been trying to get a possible reboot going but adding that it has been difficult even with some very powerful people behind her, The Grio reported. Allen cited some of the difficulties, like things can get very "convoluted when you're mixing old writers" with new ones; she also cited that she has gotten close to making it happen, but she was stopped. But Allen claimed that Bill Cosby wants to see it happen.
Besides Allen and Cosby's excitement for a possible reboot, the reunion cast that was at the taping were just as excited to be there with one another. "A Different World" cast members that could make it were Kadeem Hardison who played Dwayne Wayne; Jasmine Guy who played Whitley Gilbert; Darryl M. Bell who played Ron Johnson, Dwayne's best friend; Cree Summer who played Freddie Brooks; and Dawnn Lewis and Sinbad.
The cast was indeed excited. Summer, who is a voice-over actress, tweeted several photos. Summer tweeted photos of herself with Winfrey that read: "Today I had the honor of being interviewed by Oprah what an amazing experience." Summer also tweeted another photo with other cast members, Lewis and Guy that read, "Photo Bomb [with Lewis] Freddie & Whitley #adifferentworld," The Root reported.
Who was not at the reunion celebration were Jada Pinkett Smith, who was vacationing in Hawaii, Lisa Bonet and Charnele Brown.
Perhaps there is a market for returning shows, the semi-reunion of "Beverly Hills 90210" with Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth in ABC Family's "Mystery Girls" and the upcoming "Girl Meets World," which is a spin-off of "Boy Meets World."
Allen is hopeful of the reboot saying, "Right now we're kinda at a stand still, so we're going to re-investigate it again because it's such a good idea," The Grio reported.
