3 Things You Should Know About Selena Gomez's New Song 'De Una Vez'
Selena Gomez dropped her new Spanish song "De Una Vez" on January 15 and there are many things to look for in the song, including who it might be about.
Some of you may not know that 28-year-old Gomez was actually named after iconic Selena Quintanilla. Now, she'd following her namesake's footsteps in releasing Spanish-language "De Una Vez."
Gomez also released an accompanying music video for "De Una Vez," with references here and there to her heritage and maybe even a past love.
'De Una Vez' May Be Teasing All-Spanish Selena Gomez Album
"De Una Vez" is about healing from a broken relationship and finding self-worth. It was released almost a year after "Rare" debuted which also touched on overcoming heartbreak.
But, more importantly, it's a special nod to Gomez's Latin background.
"It felt empowering to sing in Spanish again and 'De Una Vez' is such a beautiful love anthem," she added. Gomez's first Spanish-language track was "Un Año Sin Lluvia" in 2010.
Gomez described herself as a "proud third-generation American-Mexican." She also recently opened up about her aunt and grandparents crossing the U.S. border, added Hip Latina.
Speaking with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Gomez said having another Spanish-language track has been something she looked forward to for 10 years.
"I'm so, so proud of my heritage, and just genuinely felt like I wanted this to happen," she said. For Gomez the track's release was "perfect timing" as Latin music globally "just makes people feel things." On a more promising note, the music video to the song ended with the words "Baila Conmigo" which some believe hinted to another Spanish single or a full-Spanish album, reported Billboard.
Gomez's Dress in 'De Una Vez' Music Video is Inspired by Frida Kahlo
The stunning music video, directed by team Los Pérez (Tania Verduzco and Adrián Pérez) looked like a "gorgeous dream," described Teen Vogue.
It was also heavily influenced by Gomez's Latin roots, the publication added. Some known sources of inspiration to the music video were famous Latin artists like Gabriel García Márquez and Frida Kahlo. The pink gown Gomez wears throughout the video was designed by American clothing brand Rodarte, and the main inspiration for it was Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.
Verduzco told Teen Vogue that the flowers seen in the video all connect to the idea of "renewal."
Gomez also grew to love the idea of growth in the elements of nature that were sprinkled into the video.
The dress was part of the brand's Spring/Summer 2021 collection and features a V-cut neck, puffed sleeves and printed daisies.
Some Fans Believe 'De Una Vez' is For Justin Bieber
Some Selenators started to dive a bit too deep in finding out about the song's "hidden meaning" and were led to believe it was about Gomez's former beau 26-year-old Justin Bieber, said Us Magazine.
Even though Gomez has not confirmed if the single is about the "Yummy" singer, some fans were convinced that this was the case.
However, some fans grew tired of their idol constantly being linked to her ex and dismissed the idea.
Others called on fellow fans to stop connecting all of Gomez's work with Bieber and to let the female singer shine on her own.
Gomez and Bieber were in an on-again-off-again relationship starting 2010 but had broken up for good in March 2018. Bieber had since moved on to marry American model Hailey Baldwin later that year.
