Trump Meets McCarthy at Mar-a-Lago, Agrees on GOP Goal To Take House in 2022
Former president Donald Trump met with top House Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
"The meeting between President Donald J Trump and House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, was a very good and cordial one," a statement from the Trump's office said.
It added that the two discussed many topics, and "number one of which was taking back the House in 2022."
In a separate statement released on Thursday, McCarthy confirmed that Trump has committed to help Republicans retake Congress in 2022.
As reported by New York Post, McCarthy said that House Republicans and the Trump administration had achieved historic results for all Americans.
"We were able to do this because we listened to and understood the concerns of our fellow citizens that had long been ignored... A Republican majority will listen to our fellow Americans and solve the challenges facing our nation," he noted.
Trump's office added that the former president's popularity has never been stronger than it is now, and "his endorsement means more than perhaps any endorsement at this time."
9 News reported that it is unknown where his office has based the popularity claim. But polling aggregates showed that Trump's disapproval rating is at a higher mark now compared at any point in his presidency.
A Pew Research poll on Jan. 15 showed that only 29 percent said they approve of how Donald Trump is handling his job, which is the lowest of his presidency.
Kevin McCarthy's visit came three weeks after he said that Trump bears responsibility for the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol as he failed to respond more quickly to the bloody incursion that left five people dead. But he later backtracked his statement.
The violent riot prompted 10 House Republicans to vote for Trump's impeachment. The Republicans who voted for his impeachment include Liz Cheney of Wyoming, who is known to be a top McCarthy lieutenant, according to a Tampa Bay Times report.
In his latest statement, the House minority leader said Democrats have only put forward an agenda that divides the country, "such as impeaching a President who is now a private citizen and destroying blue-collar energy jobs."
Kevin McCarthy noted that "the radical Democrat agenda must be stopped for the sake of the country." Donald Trump is currently facing an impeachment trial in the Senate for allegedly inciting rioters who stormed the Capitol.
Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel earlier said that the party would not automatically block Trump in a 2024 presidential race if he chooses to run again for the position.
"What I really do want to see him do, though, is help us win back majorities in 2022," McDaniel, a Trump loyalist, said in a report. McDaniel was reelected earlier this month to the party's top position. She said she sees Trump as having a continuing role to play even if he is not a candidate.
The RNC is planning to invite Donald Trump to its spring donor meeting in Florida in April, according to an unnamed source. In addition, Trump has said he plans to be active in endorsing candidates and opposing those he considers disloyal.

Probe on Donald Trump's Stay in Mar-a-Lago Residence
Meanwhile, Palm Beach officials are doing a legal review of Trump's use of Mar-a-Lago as a residence in line with a 1993 permit that restricts long-term stays at the resort.
But Eric Trump, Trump's son and executive vice president of the Trump Organization, said his father is within his rights to stay at the exclusive club as long as he chooses, according to a Daily Mail report.
Neighbors claimed that Trump had violated a past agreement that limits guests' stays at the Mar-a-Lago to not more than seven days and up to three non-consecutive times a year.
Donald Trump has now been at the resort for more than a week after he flew there before President Joe Biden's inauguration. He signed a special exception use agreement in 1993 that let him convert the mansion into a for-profit social club.
Eric Trump noted that the 1993 agreement did not establish a rezoning. He added that there are also stipulations in the deal with the town and zoning ordinances that mandate the club return to residential use if, for some reason, it didn't work or wasn't profitable.
He also said that his father is the owner and the director of Mar-a-Lago.
"This why these guys aren't gaining any traction... There is a big difference between a guest and an owner," Eric Trump added.
