Coronavirus New Symptom
The study entitled Ocular MRI Findings in Patients with Severe COVID-19: A Retrospective Multicenter Observational Study and is published in the Journal of Radiology suggests that critically ill patients of coronavirus may experience a range of abnormalities that manifest in their eyes.
MSN reported that lead author Augustin Lecler, MD, Ph.D., stated in a press release the findings of their study with some patients with severe COVID-19 from the French COVID-19 cohort. It shows that there are one or several nodules of the posterior pole of the globe, and this is the first time that findings like these are described utilizing an MRI.
BGR noted that the study is a collaborative effort between the French Society of Neuroradiology and the 129 patients who took part and experienced a severe COVID symptom. The majority of the participants spent their time in ICU and are given intubation.
MSN noted that even if the coronavirus is a respiratory disease, it can still cause issues to other organs. In the process, it can cause permanent lung and heart damage.
The researchers also mentioned that nodules located in the eye's macular region were discovered. However, there is no retinal involvement. Citing Mayo Clinic, the BGR report said that severe coronavirus cases can cause enlarged blood vessels, swollen eyelids, increased discharge, and even light sensitivity and irritation.
On the other hand, the researchers pointed out that retinal findings such as hemorrhages, cotton wool spots, dilated veins, and twisting veins can be associated with COVID-19 infections in humans.
Other Known Symptoms of Coronavirus
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), severe manifestations or symptoms of COVID-19 are loss of appetite, confusion, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, high body temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit), and shortness of breath.
BGR added that the alarming aspect of COVID-19 is that patients may experience lingering manifestations of the disease even if they are already free to form the virus, which can last for weeks and even months after the initial diagnosis, known as the long COVID.
Amid the coronavirus vaccine's rolling and the rise of this new symptom of COVID-19, people should still be vigilant because the infection can even occur and may endanger the lives of thousands.
