Why do you have to take the vaccine regardless of the brand?
PBS News Hour referenced an interview of Dr. Fauci saying that the current inoculation is a race between the virus and getting the vaccines to people. Fauci stressed that the longer an individual awaits not getting vaccinated, the better chance the virus will form new variants or undergo mutation.
Moderna is the only company to develop a vaccine effective against the South African variant of COVID-19 and is ready for clinical trials.
Meanwhile, a study published in the National Centers for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) noted that RNA viruses (like SARS-CoV-2) are faster to mutate than DNA viruses. However, the study highlighted that viral mutation rates are modulated at different levels, including polymerase fidelity, sequence context, secondary template structure, and other factors.
Apart from getting the COVID-19 vaccine immediately regardless of the brand, PBS News Hour stated that Dr. Fauci has mentioned that public health officials are always concerned regarding the virus variants. Dr. Fauci also stressed the importance of abiding the public health measures such as wearing masks and social distancing.
