COVID-19 Positive Migrants Released in U.S. After Mexican Migration Officials Closed a Border Camp
Eight hundred migrants from Central America were allowed to enter the U.S. Border, as Mexican Migration Officials shut down a border camp that used to house the said migrants. Surprisingly, the border authorities permitted the migrants to enter the vicinity of the United States, whether they are COVID-19 positive or not.
New York Post mentioned local officials, saying that the immigrants who reached nearby Brownsville, Texas have a growing number of COVID-infected migrants. They also noted that there is no action being done with regards to the quarantine they should undergo.
Migrants with COVID-19
Fox News noted that the current administration has denied the uptick in migrants crossings go hand in hand with a crisis, but the significant increase of the number of asylum seekers is threatening to overwhelm border officials and crowd different housing facilities the administration has established.
New York Post noted that the recent 800 Central Americans released due to a border camp closure are still not confirmed or counted on the latest COVID-19 positive results, yet they might add to the growing figure. Felipe Romero, a spokesman from Brownsville noted that 185 migrants tested positive for COVID-19 at the Brownsville Central Bus Station, the area's COVID-19 testing venue for the migrants entering the border of the United States.
Border Report mentioned United States Representative Henry Cuellar's statement last month that 108 migrants from Brownsville were released despite COVID-19 positive results. Cuellar also noted that the release of these COVID-positive migrants put the community of Southern Texas, volunteers, and border agent at high risk of contracting the virus.
As recently reported, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has opened the state 100 percent, allowing the operations of business establishments and lifting the face mask mandate. The governor, however, gave liberty to businesses to still implement safety protocols if they want.
Border Camps Closing Aftermath
New York Post mentioned that the camp situated in Matamoros, Mexico closed following the termination of the previous administration's "Remain in Mexico" policy, which is intended for the Central Americans.
Border Report mentioned Romero, saying that they let the migrants know that they are guided by CDC's guidelines and reiterate the importance of isolation and quarantine. "I want to make clear that we can't contain them. We can't stop them."
On the other hand, the recent reformation in the immigration policy of the current administration continues to receive backlash from the Republicans. New York Post added that the GOP says Biden has sparked a crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border through the message that migrants will be welcomed into the country, despite the call of White House to migrants that they should wait due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Romero added that Brownsville, Texas had recorded 1,553 migrants who undergone a test for COVID-19 as of January 26.
