The Senate confirmed Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to be President Joe Biden's labor secretary for his tenure. Walsh will be joining the roster of Cabinet members that Biden has personally picked. Walsh is also the last Cabinet Secretary to be confirmed.

Mass Live reported that Walsh will swear in his duty as the Labor Secretary on Tuesday in Washington D.C. He will then fulfill his duty alongside other Cabinet members such as Alejandro Mayorkas and Miguel Cardona.

USA Today noted that Walsh's nomination was sent to the full Senate for a vote of 68-29 to confirm him in his post. Walsh will be the first union member to serve as labor secretary.

The confirmation of Marty Walsh placed the Biden Administration in filling the spots for Cabinet positions and people with major roles in the government. As of Monday, about two dozens of President Joe Biden's nominees are already confirmed, according to an NBC News report.

"I am honored to have been called by President Biden to serve in his cabinet," said Walsh adding that he will be getting every single moment of being the mayor of Boston. Walsh was very emotional, saying he "loves being the mayor of the city he grew up in."

President Joe Biden and Walsh have a close tie. It was evident when President Biden was present during Walsh's second inauguration in 2017. Moreover, Walsh was shortlisted in the picks for the post.

Walsh's confirmation also marks a historic event in the city of Boston. In a Twitter post, Walsh congratulated Boston City Council President Kim Janey to be the acting mayor of the city. Janey will be the first woman or person of color to hold the office in the city's rich 200 years.

Walsh has been Boston's Mayor since 2014. He previously led the Boston Building Trades Council before entering the office. Moreover, he also worked at the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1997-2014. The Boston Building Trades Council is a union group.

Labor Secretary Duties

As the labor secretary, Marty Walsh is expected to execute duties concerning his post. Investopedia noted that the labor secretary, along with his office (Department of Labor), is responsible for issues that concern the U.S. Federal Standards for laborers. Domains include occupational safety, unemployment insurance benefits, work-related rights and benefits, re-employment services. Walsh is also expected to look into the standards of wages and hours worked of every laborer, the economic statistics within the labor market, and conditions in the workplace of the laborers.

Aside from the said domains, Walsh is also expected to look into economic inequality and issues related to the COVID pandemic. Of course, he is also expected to enforce current laws concerning laborers and their workplace.

Labor Secretary Marty Walsh will supervise a $12 billion agency with 17,000 employees amid the growing pressure in increasing the federal minimum wage.
